Kharian’s prominence was enhanced after the Second World War, when a substantial area was converted as a cantonment. In a short span of just five years from 1954 to 1959, the defence factor gave enormous impetus to Kharian, and following the momentum, the cantonment region developed rapidly.
Later on, in 1970 it was bifurcated, and upgraded as a sub-division. Kharian has a small, but significant population of about 30,000. The major part of greater Kharian’s population is settled abroad. Some 32 kilometres (20 mi) from Gujrat, and 16 kilometres (10 mi) from Jhelum, Kharian is sited in the middle of the two districts, and is linked to both through a major railroad. It has two-degree collages; both separate for boys and girls, and in addition have a hospital that is well-equipped. The climate of this region is tropical, and the soil here is rich and fertile, highly suitable for raising sheep, and cattle farming.
